Raising Awareness for Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury in Texas
2 Mins

Many Texans remain unaware of the serious impact of pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBI) including concussions, often believing these incidents are rare within the state. However, the reality is quite different. Early identification of TBI is crucial, and this requires proper training for educators and healthcare professionals in schools. Pediatric TBI is often referred to as a “silent epidemic” that significantly affects the lives of many children.
According to the Texas Education Agency, approximately 6,000 Texas children are hospitalized each year due to TBI, with 1,300 of these cases resulting in long-term disability. These statistics highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, training, and resources to support children affected by brain injuries.
To address this critical issue, we launched awareness efforts in our community this past March. For the first time in recent memory, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County issued proclamations declaring March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. This was a significant milestone, underscoring the importance of recognizing and addressing pediatric TBI within our communities.
Our Texas team, student ambassador, and local non-profit partner Kinetic Kids, attended the events to advocate for increased awareness and proactive measures. Through community awareness, we aim to reduce the frequency of TBI in children. Early identification of TBI can make a profound difference in a child’s recovery and quality of life. Our project provides families with free resources and education. By providing educators and healthcare professionals with the necessary training and support, we are taking essential steps to improve outcomes for children affected by traumatic brain injuries. Together, we continue to work to make a meaningful impact in our community.
